Etro Silver-Tone Embossed Drop Earrings: Nerves of Steel

Whoa, there! While they do come close to skimming the shoulders, I’m not sure Etro‘s heavy-metal earlobe-toppers qualify as “drop earrings.” Or at least the beaded and crystal-embellished danglers we usually associate with the term. These mega pieces suggest a whole other kind of “drop.” As in, I can see them pulling my earlobes down in a most painful way!

Navajo-inspired, these angular shapes are technically straight out of Santa Fe (think Aztec-print blankets and funky clay knickknacks). But in weighty, oversized silver-tone brass, they look more like steel hardware than American handicrafts. Dark-chocolate marble-enamel inserts bring some textural interest into the mix, but regardless of the detailing, it’s going to take a bold – and statuesque – woman to pull off these doorknockers with panache. I’m torn between deeming them oddly urban-cool or envisioning them behind glass at the Museum of Natural History. What do you think? Strong-willed snob or desperate-to-make-a-statement slob? On Net-a-Porter for $445.

Pair with: If you’re going to do it, don’t go halfway. Wear this major metal with conviction – and a matching cuff. Etro’s chunky triangular brass bracelet is less foreboding than the earrings, anyway. On Net-a-Porter for $710.
